The Bari defender played regularly during the warm-up friendlies, but with Giorgio Chiellini’s recovery from injury was pushed on to the bench.
“There is great disappointment, not so much because I didn’t play as the fact this adventure was over all too quickly,” he said as the squad flew back to Italy.
“I was at the disposal of the Coach and he thought other decisions were the right ones to take. Of course I have absolutely nothing to say about that.
“Unfortunately this World Cup went badly both on a personal level and for the team, above all.
“Now I will go home for a couple of days before setting off on vacation. After such a tough year I need a break to recharge the batteries so I can be ready for the new season.”
