Barcelona see Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany as a replacement for Carles Puyol.
The People says Barca's interest in Blues defender Kompany has been mentioned to Manchester City sporting director Txiki Begiristain.
Kompany, 26, was City's outstanding player last season as they won the League title for the first time in 44 years - although he has been sidelined by a worrying injury this term.
He signed a six-year deal last summer - but that will not deter Barcelona from considering a formal approach to City, who could demand up to £20million for their skipper.
