Cesc wants to see the deal happen, with his first team path blocked by Xavi.
But a Spanish source told the Daily Star Sunday: “There has been a feeling that Fabregas is going to Manchester United.
“But Barcelona have to look to the future as well as the immediate season.
“Xavi is still an important player but he’s 33 now and eventually they will have to replace him. How are they going to do that?
“They have just sold a fine, young midfield player – Thiago Alcantara – to Bayern Munich.
“The answer has to be Fabregas. If he’s prepared to be patient, he’ll eventually get a regular place in the team as Xavi’s successor.
“It wouldn’t make sense for Barcelona to sell Alcantara and Fabregas – their squad isn’t that big.”
