Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola rejected the chance to sign Angel di Maria for lesser money than Real Madrid paid for him.

Marca says the previous Barca board struck terms over a €20 million deal with Benfica for the Argentina international. But Guardiola blocked the deal, insisting he preferred to count on his young players rather than import an outside talent.

Real paid €25 million for Di Maria earlier this summer.
