Barcelona chief Robert explains Andre Gomes swoop

Barcelona chief Robert Fernandez has explained their swoop for Andre Gomes.

The midfielder joined Barca from Valencia.

He told Sport: "Five months ago, we said we liked him. We knew he could be an important player and we had to work out if the operation was worth it. We decided it was."

The reasons is found in his versatility and his potential.

"He can play in various positions, he can help us a lot and he has Barcelona's level. We had him in mind for some time. However, he should vary his style of football because he comes from a team in which he was used to running and here he needs to link [with his team-mates]. He will evolve and he's looking forward to it."

Robert denied Barcelona signed him because Real Madrid wanted to.

"I don't make a signing because Madrid are active. On top of that, he wanted to come to Barcelona. The thing was where it had to be. We knew how he thought. The player said he wanted Barcelona. He was very clear. There was no auction or anything."
