Barcelona candidate Jordi Farre reveals new kit sponsor

Barcelona presidential candidate Jordi Farré has revealed he has a new kit sponsor.

Farre is another candidate eager to end the club's ties with Qatar.

He revealed as much in an interview with EFE, in which he explained that the club does not need 'Qatar Airways' to advertise on its shirts and that he intends to replace it with the word 'Catalunya' (Catalonia).

Another of the foundations of his programme is to replace Nike with FC Barcelona's own brand. That side of the business is worth €110m.

"Nike's turnover from Barça sportswear totals €180m. The distribution network equates to 25-30% of that and the American multinational pays the club €30m. The figures speak for themselves; we're talking about a €110m business. It's a model that Borussia Dortmund are also looking into", he said.

An out-and-out Catalan nationalist, Farré said that when he talks about displaying the Catalonia brand on the club's sportswear, it isn't just for sentimental reasons.

"I think that this country can only work if we stop looking towards Madrid and start looking towards Europe and the rest of the world. Barça are not a political party. If our country swings one way, Barça cannot swing the other. The club has to serve our nation and follow its lead", he said.
