Barcelona approach Bolton for Jaaskelainen

Barcelona have made a formal approach to Bolton Wanderers for goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.

The Bolton Evening News says Barcelona are understood to have made a firm enquiry in the hope of persuading Wanderers to cash in now, rather than lose him for nothing at the end of the season.

Coach Frank Rijkaard needs back-up for his first choice keeper, Victor Valdes, while understudy, Albert Jorquera, recovers from knee surgery.

Barca had the untried Olier Olazabal on the subs' bench when they won 2-0 at Real Mallorca on Saturday to maintain their challenge on Real Madrid, who currently top La Liga.

Jaaskelainen, Wanderers' longest serving player, completed 10 years' service at the Reebok in November.

Talks over a new contract broke down earlier in the season, despite former manager, Sammy Lee, expressing a keen interest to secure his services and, although, Gary Megson rates the 32-year-old among the best in the Premiership, he says Wanderers are in no position to negotiate with any of their out-of-contract players until they know what division they will be in next season.
