Barcelona ace Messi takes out fourth Ballon d'Or

Lionel Messi has become the first player in history to take out a fourth Ballon d'Or award.

The Barcelona and Argentina maestro produced a record-breaking 2012 with 91 goals in 69 appearances to beat Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo and Barca teammate Andres Iniesta to the prize.

"To tell you the truth this is really quite unbelievable. The fourth award that I have had is just too great for words," said Messi.

"I would like to recognise my other colleagues from Barcelona; Andres it has been great to train and play alongside you. I would also like to recognise my friends in the Argentina team, everyone that has worked with me, coaches and staff and my family and friends. Also my wife and son.

"I'm more interested in team awards than I am about what I might win individually. There have been years where we won more titles that have been better."

Messi has now surpassed French great Zinedine Zidane and Brazilian legend Ronaldo to be the stand-alone winner of four Ballon d'Or's.
