Ballack to step down as German captain

Munich based newspaper Abendzeitung is reporting that Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack is ready to step down as captain of Germany. The 32 year-old will do so in order to preserve his place in the team as a compromise following a public falling out with head coach Joachim Loew.

Ballack has already issued an apology over his comments about Loew in regard to the treatment of both Torsten Frings and Kevin Kuranyi.

Bayern Munich's Phillip Lahm would then be unveiled as the new German skipper.
