Winger Babel, 21, said: "Torres and Gerrard give something extra to the squad because they have already been playing at the highest level for a couple of years in Spain and the Premier League.
"If they do all the work they can't develop things for the team.
"All our players have to work a bit harder so those special players can give that extra ingredient for the team.
"If we hadn't won at Derby I think people were going to ask themselves 'are Liverpool really strong enough for the title'.
"We won though, so now we look forward to Manchester City."
Babel was already an admirer of Gerrard's all-action style but has been in awe of his captain's contribution since arriving at Anfield in July.
He added: "Gerrard is phenomenal. He sets a fantastic example. It's something for us all to copy. I'm settled now and want to contribute more."
