Axed Williams: It wasn't meant to be

Rhys Williams has taken on a positive outlook after he was cut from the final 23 of Australia's World Cup squad.

The 21-year old Middlesbrough man was not given a berth in the Socceroos squad because of a groin injury he took with him to training camp after a tough season in England.

Although he is disappointed not be in the final 23 for South Africa, Williams knows it was the right decision as he was not at 100 percent.

"Everyone enjoys playing football ... it just wasn't meant to be,'' Williams said.

"I have been struggling for a long time, but the boss (Verbeek) and the coaching staff gave me every possible chance to be fit. We did everything possible ... maybe if I was 100 per cent I could have pushed a lot harder.

"The boss gave me a chance to stay but mentally I don't think it was best for me knowing I should be in the squad and pressing players.

"I just want to get home, see my family, have a bit of a holiday and then start my work again getting ready for next season.''
