Away form helps Tottenham target Chelsea's third place

Tottenham made it four points on the road from two matches within four days as they beat West Bromwich Albion 1-0 at The Hawthorns today.

Spurs followed on from their 1-1 draw at Norwich City on Wednesday to maintain fourth spot on the table and move within one point of third-placed Chelsea who lost at Newcastle United.

Gareth Bale scored the only goal of the match in the 67th minute which pleased manager Andre Villas-Boas but he admitted the ankle injury sustained by Jermain Defoe dampened the triumph.

"It has been a very important week for us," said Villas-Boas.

"To get four points away from home, with not much time between the games, is excellent.

"We have put ourselves in a very good position to threaten for third place.

"I am extremely happy apart from the big setback to Jermain Defoe."
