Perth Glory owner Tony Sage believes there is a 'silver lining' hidden in Australia's World Cup bid shortcomings.

The Australian bid was unsuccessful in bringing the 2022 tournament down under, losing out to Qatar, but Sage can see that it may actually benefit the national competition.

"Of course we all wanted the bid to succeed, but I see a huge silver lining,'' he told the SMHM. ''If we'd got up, all we [owners] would have heard about for the next 12 years was the World Cup.

"Now the bid is out of the way, they've got to concentrate 100 per cent on getting the A-League right. They're finally going to realise that the premium product they've got, day-to-day, is the A-League. To me, that's a positive.''

With some clubs in the A-League experiencing financial difficulties and uncertainty, scaring off potential investors, Sage is confident that big-hitters like himself and Newcastle Jets owner Nathan Tinkler will be around to help strengthen the brand.

"I'm sticking around, and from my discussions with the other owners, they've all got a Plan B in place,'' he added. ''I don't think someone like [Nathan] Tinkler is just going to drop it. Like the rest of us, he has a long-term vision for his club [Newcastle Jets].

"We're all smart businessmen, we're not dummies, and we all believe the clubs can stand on their own two feet as long as the FFA starts to listen.''
