Australia boss Osieck expecting much more from Kewell, Emerton
Australian national team coach Holger Osieck says he is expecting much better club performances from Harry Kewell and Brett Emerton.
The pair have been recalled to the Socceroos squad for upcoming World Cup qualifiers in Oman and Thailand but the German tactician has made it clear that they are not certain starters as their form for Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC respectively has not been good enough for players of their ilk.
“Referring to our last games in October I decided not to bring them because they had just started with their clubs here and I thought it was important they settle in a new environment,” Osieck said.
“But now that they have played a few games I thought I should include them but I want to make it perfectly clear: I will ask a lot more from them than what they have produced so far.
“Knowing the value they can bring to the team I invited them to be part of our travelling group.
“But there is no guarantee at all that they will be in the team. As you know I am pretty much performance related.
“I'm not saying I'm disappointed in their form but I expect a lot more, there is a slight distinction.
“I put this squad together because I have the quality and a double back-up for every position and that is my approach.
“And whoever shows the right performance in training will have an excellent chance of starting.”
