Australia beaten by Oman but stay top of WC qualifying group

Australia have been beaten 1-0 by Oman in Group D of World Cup qualifying in Asia.

The Socceroos field a fairly strong line-up with the likes of Mark Schwarzer, Lucas Neill, Harry Kewell, Brett Holman and Josh Kennedy all starting but they were unable to do the job in Muscat.

Amad Al Hosni's 18th minute goal separated the two sides as Paul Le Guen's men recorded their first victory in four group stage matches to move within five points of the Australians.

Holger Osieck's men sit at the top of the group with nine points from four outings whilst Thailand, Australia's opponents in Bangkok on Tuesday, are second on four with their meeting with Saudi Arabia still to come.

In other Asian qualifying matches, Japan defeated Tajikistan 4-0 away, Korea Republic recorded a 2-0 away victory over UAE and Uzbekistan beat Korea DPR 1-0.
