Aussies in European action this week

Several Australians are in action in Europe this week. With the commencement of the new Europa League, plenty of teams in Europe get the opportunity to pit their wares against clubs they would never usually get to challenge.

Scott McDonald and Celtic, for instance, travel to Israel to take on Hapoel Tel-Aviv on Thursday at Bloomfield Stadium.

The Hoops were unlucky in going down to Arsenal in a Champions League qualifier, hence find themselves in the second tier of European action, but will be sure to get off to a good start and back up their solid beginning to the Scottish Premier League.

McDonald will also be hungry for goals on the Europe circuit after netting three times on his first four league outings this term.

In Bulgaria, Australian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer should return to the Fulham line-up after missing Sunday's clash with Tim Cahill's Everton.

Schwarzer missed with neck stiffness but is expected to take the gloves for the clash with CSKA Sofia at Stadium Balgarska Armiya.

Scott Chipperfield and his Swiss club, FC Basel, host Italian outfit AS Roma at St Jakob Park.

The Swiss will have their work cut out for them as Roma boast the likes of Italy stars Francesco Totti and Daniele De Rossi.

Harry Kewell will travel with Galatasaray to Athens to take on Panathinaikos.

The Turks have begun their Turkish Super Lig campaign with five wins from five outings and Kewell has been in stellar form as well.

David Carney's new club Twente Enschede are away to Fenerbahce in Turkey and may have former Perth Glory youngster Nikita Rukavytsya in tow whilst Tim Cahill and Everton will be looking to reverse recent poor results in the Premier League when they host Greek outfit AEK Athens at Goodison Park.
