Atlético Madrid president Enrique Cerezo says the signing of Fernando Torres was a direct request by coach Diego Simeone.
Torres joins Atletico on-loan from AC Milan.
"Simeone hardly ever asks us for anything but he asked for Torres. It wasn't easy to bring him back here but after a lot of hard work, we made it possible. It's a happy and important day for Atleti," Cerezo said.
"During negotiations with Fernando, the subject of money wasn't raised - there was no need. His heart is at Atlético and he is excited to be coming back, as are the fans".
Cerezo added: "His return if for sporting reasons, he wants to show that he is still a top level player. He was, and will continue to be, a great footballer. He is going to be a big help to the team. Watching Torres back at the Calderón is going to be a real treat."
