Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has apologised to fans for their humiliating 6-1 defeat at Barcelona.

"I have spoken to Atletico people and they have told me that someone should apologize to the fans for what happened in Barcelona," said Cerezo. "I reiterate that something like what happened on Saturday will not happen again for many years, but on behalf of the staff, the coaching staff and directors, I ask forgiveness from our fans.

"The coach (Javier Aguirre) has taken the blame for the defeat and it is a fact that he was responsible, but we also need to consider many things and the players must know that they have not won anything yet.

"I say this because we've won two Champions League matches and nothing else."
