Antoine Griezmann struck in injury-time to deliver victory for Atletico Madrid against Sporting Gijon.

It looked set to finish disappointingly for the home side, albeit with the slight consolation that a point would lift them to third place in the Primera Division.

But Griezmann stayed predatory until the end, and when Diego Godin flicked on a hopeful ball forward hoisted forward from deep on the left he sneaked behind the Sporting defensive ranks to nod in.

Godin said afterwards: "This was an important result for us because we really needed to win and by making an extra effort, we were able to do so. We suffered because that's what Atleti are about but we never give in, we never lose hope.

"It was a tough game, our fans seemed very anxious – like us. Luckily there was just enough time for Griezmann to score a spectacular goal. This makes us stronger but we will continue working with the same humility. We gave everything. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't but we gave everything we had tonight."
