Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone stands by the decision not to offer Fernando Torres a new contract.

The striker will leave Atletico this summer, which he announced this week.

Asked about the veteran, Simeone said: "Fernando was very clear in what he said regarding his explanation and his needs.

"I have admiration for him, like all players.

"But it is clear that he has been and will be an icon of Atletico, an absolute idol.

"I feel responsible for Torres having returned, I have been one of those who most sought his return. Beyond that in his decision I am also a participant, I feel that way."
