ASTON VILLA V SWANSEA RECAP: Swans heap more misery on Villa with 2-1 win

Andre Ayew's late winner put the final nail in the coffin of Tim Sherwood's Aston Villa tenure and in the process secured Swansea a 2-1 win over the Villans at Villa Park.

Andre's brother Jordan had given Villa the lead with a headed goal in the 62nd minute, but it was quickly cancelled out by Gylfi Sigurdsson's free-kick six minutes later.

Ayew popped up with three minute remaining in regulation to stroke home Kyle Naughton's cross secure three points for the visitors.

Villa slumped to their sixth consecutive defeat and sit bottom of the Premier League table.

TALKING POINTS
Sherwood lost his job as a consequence of Villa's dismal start to the Premier League season. The question now for the Villans is can they find a replacement for Sherwood that can get enough out of their current squad to avoid relegation at season's end.

Swansea secured a much-needed win, their first since they upset Manchester United on August 31. The victory over the Villans elevated the Swans to 13th spot on the Premier League ladder.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Villa travel to St Mary's to face Southampton in the League Cup on Wednesday, before another road game against Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday.

Swansea host Arsenal at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday.

QUOTES CORNER

Sherwood reviews his final match in charge of Villa:

"I'm disappointed with result. I didn't think we deserved to lose. We can't carry anyone because we're getting done.

"I said to the boys every one has to play to their maximum to get anything from a game. At the moment we are short.

"The boys gave everything. There's no shortage in desire but the quality is not quite there."

Swans boss Gary Monk discusses the importance of his team's victory:

"The period that we have been in and the way we have been playing, it was good to get the three points in the way we did.

"All of it has been a bit of a circus this week. It was about getting through this period. Hopefully, we can get some momentum now.

"Concerning speculation about his role, Monk added: "I don't concentrate on it. I don't focus on it. I focus myself and group on football."
