Aston Villa's Dunne on Republic of Ireland standby despite injury

Richard Dunne has been named as a standby in the Republic of Ireland squad for upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The Aston Villa defender has not played for his club this season because of a groin injury but Giovanni Trapattoni has him on a list of potential players to call on just in case he finds fitness prior to next month's qualifiers against Germany and the Faroe Islands.

The Ireland team defeated Kazakhstan 2-1 in their opening 2014 WC qualifier thanks to a late show from Robbie Keane and Kevin Doyle and will need to improve their output in the next two matches if they want to give themselves every chance of making it to Brazil.

Trapattoni has named a 23-man squad including midfielder Keith Andrews, who is back from suspension, and the likes of Keane, Doyle, Shane Long and Aiden McGeady.
