Aston Villa had scouts check on Sporting Lisbon midfielder Miguel Veloso on the weekend.
Veloso was in action against Nottingham Forest and Villa boss Martin O'Neill had him watched.
The Portugal international is considered by O'Neill as a replacement for Manchester City signing Gareth Barry.
