Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill is willing to offer £6 million for Middlesbrough defender David Wheater.
The Mirror says O'Neill watched England stopper Wheater,22, in Boro's first game of the season against Sheffield United.
The Villa chief, who has already signed Stewart Downing from Boro, is now ready to act after being told Portsmouth's Sylvain Distin is not for sale.
