Aston Villa edge past Sunderland in penalty shootout

Aston Villa overcame some shaky moments to move past Sunderland and into the next phase of the Carling Cup with a win via penalties.

American goalkeeper Brad Guzan was the hero for Villa at the Stadium of Light, making a late penalty save against Kenwyne Jones before saving three of the Black Cats' four spot-kicks in the shootout.

With the match ending 0-0 after extra-time, the contest went to penalties and it was Villa who came out on top, winning 4-1.

For Villa, John Carew, James Collins and Ashley Young all converted their spot-kicks whilst Gabriel Agbonlahor missed his.

In the Sunderland camp, besides Jones' regular time miss, Andy Reid, Lorik Cana and Jordan Henderson all their advances saved by Guzan whilst Steed Malbranque was the only player to convert.
