Aston Villa are closing in on a deal for Sporting Braga defender Evaldo.

The News of the World says Evaldo, 28, has been earning rave reviews in Portugal and has been attracting interest from several top clubs in Europe.

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill is keen to bolster his defence as speculation continues to surround the future of Luke Young.

The player's agent Renato Moura said: "I have been in England and it is true that several clubs have enquired about Evaldo."

Reports in Portugal suggest that a move could be finalised this week and Villa are the strong favourites to clinch his signature.
