Aston Villa captain Delph keen to emulate Liverpool icon Gerrard, Man Utd star Carrick

Aston Villa star Fabian Delph wants to reach the heights of Steven Gerrard and Michael Carrick.

Following the retirements of Gerrard and Frank Lampard, Villa captain Delph is looking to take over the mantle as England's next key midfielder.

Delph has been crucial so far in the Three Lions' wonderful Euro2016 qualifying campaign but despite his tremendous progress, the midfielder feels that he still has a long way to go before matching the likes of Gerrard or Carrick.

"My England debut started off pretty rash but I seemed to settle down after a few reckless challenges. My disciplinary record since then hasn't been as bad," said Delph.

"I want to improve and get better in every aspect. I want to be more influential in games. I watch quite a bit of football and try to watch midfielders closely and see what they are doing.

"I'm a big admirer of players like Gerrard and Carrick. I'd like to be an all-round midfielder and try to take a bit from everyone I've seen and played with."
