Aston Villa boss Houllier makes sure no confusion over Liverpool legacy

Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier is making sure there is no confusion over what he did for Liverpool during his time in charge.

Houllier is going through a tough spell with his new team but can reflect on the 'legacy' he left.

He said: "I think the fans will make it special for me. At the moment I don't feel anything special but I'm sure when I get on the pitch I will be different.

"The mission of a manager is three-fold. First, to have silverware and win titles and so on - we did that. The second one is to leave a legacy - I would just use my former chairman's words. He said 'You put the club into the 21st century'.

"It needed that, at the time. The legacy is the team because the team that was left with Rafa Benitez won the Champions League the next year.

"We also had new facilities and, I would say, maybe a new style of professionalism.

"The third mission of a manager is to make your players improve. We had a Ballon d'Or with Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard is a world-class international player.

"All the players, whether it's Danny Murphy, Emile Heskey, Stephane Henchoz or Sami Hyypia, they all became better." Houllier, 63, is not worried he perhaps was not given the credit he deserves for his spell at Anfield. After all, he does a good job of that himself.

He added: "Once you leave the club it's finished. To me, they gave me enough joy not to have regret. I had a good period with them."

Houllier insists he is not feeling the pressure despite Villa lying just two points above the relegation zone.

He added: "In the first year usually you lay the foundations and put your philosophy into place.

"The second year you start winning and the third year you hope you get success. That's usually it. Let's survive first."
