Assistant boss Carver apologises for altercation with Newcastle fans

Newcastle United's assistant manager John Carver has apologised to fans after swearing at a section of the travelling support during the 4-0 defeat at Southampton on Saturday. During the game Carver was seen pointing to and apparently swearing at a section of the travelling support who were holding a "Pardew Out" banner.

His actions resulted in complaints from the fans and, in a statement published on Newcastle United's website on Thursday, Carver insisted he was sorry, saying: "I sincerely apologise for any offence caused by my reaction."

The statement added: "Newcastle United received a number of complaints from supporters regarding the conduct of its coaching staff during and after the defeat to Southampton on Saturday, 13th September.

"This matter has now been dealt with internally."
