Ashley told Keegan to forget Ronaldinho, Beckham for Newcastle

Newcastle United boss Kevin Keegan had Barcelona superstar Ronaldinho at the top of his dream summer shopping list.

The People says the first two names on Keegan's list to owner Mike Ashley were Barcelona star Ronaldinho and former England captain David Beckham.

But Ashley's response left Keegan in no doubt that while he might be massively wealthy, he will not be a cash cow to fund a wild spending spree on 'trophy' players who may have a quick-fix effect - but won't do anything to enhance the long-term future prospects of Newcastle.

And Keegan's desire to import star names like Ronaldinho and Beckham strengthened Ashley's desire to re-shape the management structure at St James' Park.

Keegan had hoped for major funds to attract the game's top names, like Ronaldinho.

But Ashley won't be rail-roaded into squandering millions - and that has been a steep learning curve for the new boss who wants to go on a summer spree.
