Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew needs a high table finish to keep his job this season.

The Evening Chronicle says Pardew has found himself under pressure once more after a mediocre start to the season, although club sources moved to play down a report that he is just two games from the sack.

It is understood that Mike Ashley has set Pardew a target of a top eight finish and further struggles would be very damaging for the manager, who has been supplied with nine new arrivals in the close season.
