Arsenal's Gibbs admits fullback role down to luck

Arsenal youngster Kieran Gibbs admits it was only by chance that he ended up at left-back.

Gibbs owes his place and his role in the team to one misfortune and one intuitive team selection by Arsene Wenger.

He was originally part of the Wimbledon youth set-up, but was snapped up by Arsenal when the academy folded.

Gibbs was also a midfielder when he joined Arsenal - "Dennis Bergkamp was my hero" - but two years ago made the switch to left-back ahead of a Carling Cup game.

He said: "Armand Traore was injured and the boss switched me to left-back .

"I have been there ever since."
