Arsenal aren't rushing to make a statement over Per Mertesacker's injury.

The Daily Star says the big defender is set to miss up to five months after suffering a knee injury in the 1-1 draw with Lens last week.

He was absent as Arsenal's squad jetted out yesterday for the pre-season tour of America.

The club are yet to confirm Mertesacker's injury but, according to Sky Sports, will make a statement by Thursday.

Mertesacker was expected to be appointed Arsenal captain for the forthcoming season following Mikel Arteta's departure.
