Arsenal will step up their pursuit of Sporting CP midfielder William Carvalho later this week. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger sees Carvalho as the ideal defensive midfield signing ahead of next week's transfer deadline.
Wenger was also keen on Sami Khedira, but Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti ruled out the German's departure yesterday.
Record says Wenger is now focusing on Carvalho, but won't move until he is sure of their Champions League progress. Once their qualifier with Besiktas is decided, then Wenger will bid for the midfielder.
While Carvalho's buyout clause is set at €45 million, intermediaries are confident Sporting will sell for less than half that figure.
