Arsenal stakeholder Usmanov considered Liverpool takeover

Arsenal major stakeholder Alisher Usmanov considered a takeover move for Liverpool, it has been revealed.

The Sun says the Russia-based billionaire wanted to get a foothold in English football two years ago - but could see no way in at the Gunners.

He first talked with Arsenal's bitter North London rivals Spurs and then considered an investment in Liverpool.

But neither appealed to the Uzbek steel tycoon and in Liverpool's case he wanted the Moores family to stay in control at a time when they wanted to sell out completely.

Usmanov then switched to Arsenal and bought former vice-chairman David Dein's 14 per cent stake - which he has since built up to 23 per cent.

A source told The Sun: "Alisher always wanted to get involved with Arsenal. It's his club."
