Arsenal are expected to make an offer for Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker.
The Daily Mail says the 26-year-old's pedigree is unquestionable and, at 6ft 6in, Arsene Wenger feels his height is a key plus point.
The Werder Bremen player, who has 75 caps, was an Arsenal target 12 months ago and now has less than a year to run on his contract.
The German side value him at around £9million but could let him go for £6.5m.
Wenger would prefer a centre half with Barclays Premier League experience, namely Phil Jagielka, but Everton's £18m valuation is proving a major stumbling block.
Bolton's Gary Cahill is another option, but Wenger does not feel the England international is worth £17m.
