Arsenal set to make offer for Werder Bremen defender Mertesacker

Arsenal are expected to make an offer for Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker.

Arsenal are expected to make an offer for Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker.

The Daily Mail says the 26-year-old’s pedigree is unquestionable and, at 6ft 6in, Arsene Wenger feels his height is a key plus point.

The Werder Bremen player, who has 75 caps, was an Arsenal target 12 months ago and now has less than a year to run on his contract.

The German side value him at around £9million but could let him go for £6.5m.

Wenger would prefer a centre half with Barclays Premier League experience, namely Phil Jagielka, but Everton’s £18m valuation is proving a major stumbling block.

Bolton’s Gary Cahill is another option, but Wenger does not feel the England international is worth £17m.
