Arsenal's Vermaelen, Koscielny struggling ahead of Sunderland clash

Arsene Wenger has a defensive problem on his hands as Arsenal prepare for Saturday's trip to Sunderland.

Gunners skipper Thomas Vermaelen is still battling an ankle problem whilst Laurent Kocielny sustained a calf injury during France's friendly loss to Germany on Wednesday night.

This gives Wenger the option of starting either Sebastien Squillaci or youngster Ignasi Miquel in central defence alongside Per Mertesacker when they take on the Black Cats at the Stadium of Light.

Arsenal sit sixth on the Premier League table, five points behind third-placed Chelsea, whilst Sunderland find themselves 12th after failing to win either of their past two outings.
