Paul Scholes is of the belief that Arsenal's Mesut Ozil requires a strong leadership presence to get the most out of him.
The German playmaker has been much-maligned since joining the Gunners from Real Madrid for £42.5million in September 2013 and the criticism has continued through Manchester United legend Scholes.
The former midfield maestro used his column with The Independent to take a shot at Ozil who he feels needs somebody headstrong around him to really be a dangerous commodity.
'I think Mesut Özil took the easy option joining Arsenal,' wrote Scholes.
'Since he has been there you cannot doubt his quality but at times he looks like he is going through the motions, however much ground he covers.
'He needs a leader around him to get him going. At Real Madrid he had a chance of winning league titles.
'At Arsenal that is not on the cards.'
