Arsenal's Mertesacker: Monaco deserved to go through

Per Mertesacker feels Arsenal did not deserve to progress in the Champions League.

Despite winning the Round of 16 second leg 2-0 over Monaco at the Stade Louis II on Tuesday night, the Gunners were eliminated from Europe's premier club competition on away goals after a 3-3 aggregate.

The north Londoners flopped at home late last month, losing 3-1, which ultimately cost them a spot in the quarter-finals which Mertesacker agrees with.

"The best team went through," the German centre-back told ITV 1.

"They deserved it because they played much better in the first leg. We had to come back from a massive deficit. We played well today but it wasn't enough.

"You come here and try absolutely everything. You look at the game and we could have scored more than two. We don't look back to the first game - that was already over - and we tried to do our best today but it wasn't enough.

"They deserve it and that's absolutely fine because away from home they played a lot better and we had a lot of problems. We responded well today, we have to admit that."

Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey scored either side of the break to give Arsenal a chance but they were unable to grab the third goal required to send them through to the final eight.
