Arsenal require new Gilberto Silva to be a force - Keown

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown believes Arsene Wenger needs another Gilberto Silva if he wants to bring more silverware to the Emirate Stadium.

The Gunners strengthened their squad well over the summer but did not add a quality holding midfielder which Keown believes could be the difference between them seriously challenging for the title this season.

Ex-Brazil star Gilberto Silva joined Arsenal from Atletico Mineiro in 2002 and won on Premier League title and two FA Cups under Wenger suggesting to Keown that the current squad needs a payer of his stature to add more bite to the line-up.

"That's the area Wenger will look to [strengthen] next," the Arsenal hero told talkSPORT's Drivetime.

"You want someone who is going to run the game for you, a more robust, defensive-minded midfield player.

"Someone like Gilberto Silva, he raised the bar coming into the club as a World Cup winner.

"He was a great champion, a real leader and very vocal in the dressing room, if they had someone like that now it would add a great deal to the team."
