Arsenal pair Mertesacker, Ozil hail manner of Everton thrashing

Arsenal's players were delighted with the manner of their stunning 5-2 win at Everton today.

Arsenal bounced back from going 1-0 down to thrash Everton and increase the pressure on Toffees boss Ronald Koeman.

Nacho Monreal, Mesut Ozil, Alexandre Lacazette and Aaron Ramsey netted for the Gunners after Wayne Rooney opened the scoring for the hosts.

Oumar Niasse pulled one back before Alexis Sanchez added Arsenal's fifth.

Everton's Idrissa Gueye was sent off for a second yellow card as the pressure grows on boss Ronald Koeman.

Defeat left Everton without a win in five games in all competitions.

A first league victory on the road this season lifted Arsene Wenger's Arsenal above Watford into fifth in the table.

Gunners skipper Per Mertesacker said: "We started really well, to go 1-0 behind was difficult, but we stuck to our game plan and created a lot of chances in the first half that we did not execute. In the second-half we executed better, our guys on top did it, it was crucial to have Mesut Ozil today.

"We knew Everton were under pressure and we took advantage. We don't need anyone to judge what we do, the only answer you can give is on the pitch.The way we handled the situation away from home was magnificent."

Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil added: "We are so happy to win the game. We knew it would be difficult but we showed character. We believed in ourselves."

On the fact it was the first time Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Alexandre Lacazette all started, Ozil added:

"In training we always show our quality together. Today you saw on the pitch. We showed our quality and all scored."
