Granit Xhaka was given a rousing reception by Borussia Monchengladbach on Tuesday night.
The Swiss midfielder never got the chance to say goodbye and thank you to the fans of the German club after he left to join Arsenal in the summer.
Prior to kick-off before the clash with Wolfsburg, Xhaka stepped out onto the pitch at Borussia-Park to wave to the supporters in what was a gesture of appreciation for his time at the club.
Xhaka also donned a special t-shirt which read: 'Thank you for four unforgettable years'.
However, his presence did not bring Gladbach any luck as they slumped 2-1 to a second straight loss which saw them fall to 14th on the Bundesliga table.
The Gladbach Twitter operators were at it again with some comedic value to mark Xhaka's temporary return.
