Arsenal and Manchester United are chasing Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez.
The Sunday Mirror says Arsenal have already made enquiries over his availability.
Arsene Wenger ultimately added Shkodran Mustafi to his squad this summer after being scared off by Gimenez's £40m price-tag.
But the Gunners gaffer is said to maintain an interest in the centre-back and he may be forced to go head-to-head with old foe Jose Mourinho if he is to secure the Uruguay international's services.
The Manchester United boss was alerted to Gimenez's promise by scouts who have been keeping tabs on his club-mate Antoine Griezmann.
