Arsenal legend Ian Wright was happy to hear Wayne Rooney admit he was wrong to demand a move from Manchester United two years ago.

But Wright admits he still doesn't understand what led to Rooney's original actions.

He told Absolute Radio: "Well I admire him for coming out and admitting that you know, but sometimes people don't understand there's a lot going on behind the scenes of a top player, especially like that. I think that he's got like a massive team around him, you know and so he's most probably getting advice from all over the place and sometimes, you know you can't see the wood for the trees and stuff like that.

"At the end of the day you're at somewhere like Man United, I found it strange that he would do that because I'm not sure, apart from maybe Barcelona or Real Madrid, what you're going to leave Man United for it's a massive club, you know what I mean, a great manager and he's still relatively a young man.

"So there's certain things that happen with Wayne where you have to say well may be that wasn't the greatest thing to do. But at the same time that was resolved and soon afterwards he proved how much he wanted to be at Man United and scored a lot of goals and done pretty well. So at the end of the day he's still growing up, he's still maturing, you know what I mean, he's most problem sat down at his time of leisure and realised that was a big mistake in his life and hopefully that doesn't happen again for his sake so he can be settled and play the kind of football that not only Manchester United but England need him to play.

"And I think that happens easier when you are settled in your mind."
