Arsenal legend Wright: FA Cup could condemn Wigan to relegation

Arsenal legend Ian Wright fears Wigan Athletic could condemn themselves to relegation if they beat Millwall in the FA Cup semifinals this weekend.

Wright wrote in The Sun: "If Wigan reach the FA Cup final - and they're odds-on favourites to do so - they will almost certainly be playing in Europe next season.

"But in the Latics' case - as much as it really would be an incredible feat - it could turn out to be a horror story for Roberto Martinez and Co.

"If they beat Millwall in the semi, the only way they could miss out is if Chelsea win the Cup and finish fifth in the Premier League.

"Yet that looks increasingly unlikely, meaning the winners of Saturday's semi-final can look forward to a place in the Europa League.

"And if that club is Wigan, the town whose only other recent European experience has been a rugby league trip to Catalans, I fear it could lead to a whole lot of trouble.

"Once again they are fighting for their Premier League lives and once again I expect them to pull off the great escape. But look how hard it has been for them to keep their heads above water - and that's when they are purely focusing on domestic duties."
