Arsenal legend Wright asks England fans: World Cup glory or Bridge feelings?

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has told fans to think of England when pondering whether Chelsea skipper John Terry should retain the captaincy.

In his column for The Sun, Wright argued: "I have tremendous sympathy for Wayne Bridge, a player I know well and respect hugely.

"But in this situation, I am not in 'Team Bridge' or 'Team Terry'. I am only in 'Team England'. If it is a choice between Bridge's happiness or England winning the World Cup with a skipper they want in charge, I ask you what would you want?

"I would be very surprised if you did not go with me on this one, because, for football reasons, it has to be the latter for me. I know that sounds harsh and cold, yet I am speaking from a football fan's point of view.

"And I know from bitter personal experience that this sort of thing does not affect performances on the pitch. When I was stupid enough to hurt my family and my ex-wife in a similar situation while with Arsenal, I angered a number of my team-mates.

"They told me what they thought of me in the dressing room and how they had lost respect for me. But they continued to pass to me on the pitch, even if they did not always speak to me off it for a while.

"It did not impact on team performances on the pitch."
