Arsenal legend Winterburn delighted with Blackburn move

Nigel Winterburn is delighted to be joining Blackburn Rovers as their new defensive coach.

Winterburn told BBC London 94.9: "It's something I've been looking to do for a year-and-a-half.

"I'll work mainly with the back four and goalkeeper, looking at ways we can improve on their defensive record of last season, which was still very good.

"There can always be improvements in any team you look at," he said.

The former Arsenal defender won three titles with the Gunners but is the latest of the famous back four to move into coaching following Tony Adams (Portsmouth) and Steve Bould (Arsenal under-18s).

"I think the way forward in football is to break the game down into sections: goalkeeping coaches, strikers working with teams. I'll work mainly with the back four and goalkeeper.

"I've had a passion for defending and defending properly.

"Paul and the rest of the back-room staff will get them to play the style of football they want to play, I will have nothing to do with that whatsoever.

Winterburn added that Ince's approach came as a bit of a surprise.

"I've played against Paul many times and we've had some fantastic battles - Manchester United against Arsenal.

"I don't know him that well, I've met him a couple of times but from what I can gather he's a forward-thinking manager who thinks the idea will work well."
