Arsenal keeper Szczesny: My Euros nightmare

Wojciech Szczesny says his Euros debut was a "nightmare".

Poland started strongly and deservedly took the lead through Robert Lewandowski but they were pegged back when a right-wing cross caused consternation in Szczesny's penalty area and Dimitris Salpingidis converted from close range.

The Arsenal goalkeeper was then sent off for a foul on Salpingidis inside the box but, to his delight, substitute Przemek Tyton pushed away Giorgos Karagounis' spot kick to preserve a point for the Poles.

"To some extent, yes [it was a nightmare for me]," Szczesny told reporters after the game. "But it would have been the worst possible nightmare if the Greeks had converted the penalty.

"Przemek [Tyto?] saved that brilliantly. I immediately felt that it eased some pressure on me. I won't be remembering this match well though.

"It was a penalty, for sure. Was it a red card? It's hard for me to say, I haven't seen the replays yet to see where the ball was heading to. But I didn't argue and had to accept it. I was still in the tunnel when the penalty was taken and I was really happy that it was saved - some pressure went off.

"[For the first goal] a cross was coming on to the near post, I was trying to get there in front of everyone but we just all collided. The ball could have dropped anywhere - into my hand, to defenders or a Greek striker - and it happened to be the latter. A bit of a typical mess in the box, really.

"I won't play against Russia, that's for sure," added Szczesny. "It's up to the head coach if I play after the suspension against the Czech Republic. It's hard to say. Przemek played well today and if he does the same against Russia, he will probably keep his place in the team."
