Arsenal hero Alan Smith isn't surprised Louis van Gaal wants to sign Dirk Kuyt for Manchester United.
Any move for the Fenerbahce ace would be controversial given his Liverpool ties.
Smith, reflecting on Holland's World Cup win over Mexico, wrote in the Telegraph: "Arjen Robben grabs the headlines and rightly so but a special mention must go to Dirk Kuyt who got through an incredible amount of work in the Estadio Castelao.
"I know this is hardly fresh news, praising the stamina of the blonde workhorse, but this was quite exceptional, even by Kuyt's standards, since he remained throughout in the glaring sun.
"With the shade on the other side, he started at left-wing-back before switching to right-back in the second half.
"Reports have suggested Louis van Gaal might be thinking of taking Kuyt to Manchester United. If those stories are true, nothing that happened here would have changed the manager's mind."
